WINNIPEG, MB, October 5, 2020 – Aurora Family Therapy Centre (AFTC), an incorporated, non-profit, charitable organization in Winnipeg, seeks a new Executive Director as it nears completion of its 48th year of operation. John Smyth, Executive Director since 2011, announced his upcoming retirement in the coming months.  John says, “The past 4 years have been a time of growth and development at AFTC that is unparalleled in our history. AFTC is a progressive agency that is developing into a regional centre of excellence for cross-cultural therapy from a systemic lens focussing on psychological trauma, recovery, and community development.  I am confident that AFTC’s strong team of staff, Board of Directors, financial stability, relationships with communities, and stakeholders will ensure AFTC will continue to grow and thrive.”

The Executive Director will lead the mission committed to providing systemic therapy to strengthen family relationships, individuals, and communities through cross-cultural and trauma-informed care.

AFTC serves the people of Winnipeg and other communities in Manitoba in four major ways: As a United Way agency it offers affordable therapy to couples, families, and individuals; It provides the clinical facility where students in the Master of Marriage and Family Therapy (MMFT) program at the University of Winnipeg do the majority of their clinical training; We have a vibrant Newcomer Community Development Program funded through the Government of Canada and the Province of Manitoba that assists newcomers in successful settlement in our community; We lead a unique service model that brings together community, community-based agencies and the formal mental health system in an interdisciplinary team that provides for the needs of newcomers with moderate to severe trauma/PTSD through clinical treatment, cultural healing, trauma-informed services, and therapy.  AFTC strives to be culturally sensitive, inclusive, and accessible.

Board Chair, Reuben Garang commented, “Thank you John for your dedication, passion, and commitment to AFTC and the people and communities we serve. Your integrated leadership made AFTC a hub for meaningful diversity and inclusion not only in Manitoba but also in Canada. We are now searching for a special leader that can carry on with this commitment and continue to build upon the strong foundation of this organization.”
