The Position
Summit Search Group has been retained by the Canadian Bar Association, Saskatchewan (CBA-SK) on the recruitment of their next Executive Director. The Canadian Bar Association, Saskatchewan Branch (CBA-SK) is a volunteer-driven, non-profit organization serving over 1,300 members, including lawyers, judges, law professors, and law students. As part of the national Canadian Bar Association, which represents more than 39,000 legal professionals across the country, CBA-SK plays a vital role in supporting and advancing the legal profession in Saskatchewan.
The Executive Director serves the branch’s operations, including administration, finances, communications, programs, and services. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for ensuring the organization delivers high-quality services, products, and benefits to its members in a financially responsible and professional manner.
This is an opportunity to lead a dynamic organization that promotes advocacy, professional development, and community engagement within Saskatchewan’s legal sector.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Strategy:
- Provide visionary leadership, motivating and engaging staff, volunteers, and stakeholders.
- Foster a culture of collaboration, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
- Navigate shifting priorities with sound judgment and strategic decision-making.
- Oversee multiple projects and initiatives, balancing short-term execution with long-term goals.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to the Board of Directors, providing insights on operations, strategy, and member services.
Governance & Board Relations
- Prepare agendas, reports, and documentation for Board, Council, and Annual meetings.
- Maintain accurate meeting records, correspondence, and minutes.
- Develop and implement annual plans for activities, services, and resource allocation.
- Provide regular updates to the Board on progress, challenges, and opportunities.
- Serve as an ex-officio member of the Board and committees, contributing to discussions and decisions.
Stakeholder & Member Engagement
- Act as the primary liaison for members, responding to inquiries and gathering feedback to enhance programs and services.
- Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including the Law Society of Saskatchewan, Ministry of Justice, and Courts.
- Represent CBA-SK at professional and social events.
- Facilitate engagement and programming for law students at the College of Law.
Programs, Events & Communications
- Oversee the development and distribution of publications, including the bi-monthly newsletter SaskWatch and online BarNotes articles.
- Manage the CBA-SK Legal Directory & Dayplanner and the Mentorship Program for law students.
- Coordinate the Mid-Winter Conference and professional development events, ensuring strong organization, budget control, and sponsorship engagement.
- Supervise section meetings and events, delivering high-quality programming for members.
National Coordination & Governance
- Participate in the CBA National Management Team, contributing to strategic discussions and initiatives.
- Collaborate with national leadership to align Saskatchewan’s operations with broader CBA priorities.
- Attend national Leadership Forums and governance events (requiring travel to Ottawa or other locations 3-4 times annually).
Human Resources & Organizational Management
- Determine staffing needs and oversee recruitment, onboarding, and performance management.
- Foster a positive, inclusive, and legally compliant workplace culture.
- Provide coaching, mentorship, and conduct annual performance evaluations.
- Implement HR policies and oversee adherence to best practices.
- Manage disciplinary actions or staffing changes in consultation with the CBA-SK President.
Qualifications:
- Proven leadership experience with the ability to collaborate effectively.
- Strong judgment and problem-solving skills in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work remotely with a dedicated home office space.
- Experience managing multiple projects and stakeholders.
- Knowledge of governance, financial management, and nonprofit operations.
