Sport Manitoba is the leading planning, programming, and funding agency for the development of amateur sport in Manitoba. Their goal is simple: they aim to ensure every Manitoban has access to the resources they need to achieve their full athletic potential. They work with over 100 provincial and community organizations to develop the skill sets of Manitoba’s athletes, coaches, volunteers, and officials. Since their establishment in 1996, they have witnessed countless inspiring stories of individuals overcoming challenges, reaching new heights, and leaving a lasting impact on the sporting landscape.
The Position:
The President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is responsible for the overall leadership, administration, and management of Sport Manitoba. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the CEO provides strategic direction and operational oversight to advance Sport Manitoba’s mission, vision, and values. As the organization’s primary ambassador and public voice, the President & CEO builds and maintains strong relationships with Provincial Sport Organizations, government partners, funders, and community stakeholders. The President & CEO advances high-quality, inclusive, and safe sport delivery throughout Manitoba while ensuring financial sustainability, organizational effectiveness, and long-term impact.
Key Responsibilities:
Governance and Board Relations
- Serve as the senior staff resource to the Board of Directors and its committees
- Advise the Board on policy, strategy, organizational performance, and emerging issues affecting Sport Manitoba
- Attend all meetings of the Board and committees as a non-voting ex-officio member
- Ensure the timelypreparation of agendas, reports, minutes, and follow-up actions
- Keep the Board, through the Chair, fully informed of significant developments, risks, and opportunities
Strategic Leadership and Planning
- Lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of strategic and business plans aligned with Board-approved priorities
- Translate strategic objectivesinto operational plans with measurable outcomes
- Monitor progress and report regularly to the Board on organizational performance and impact
Financial Management, Facilities and Sustainability
- Direct the preparation of annual operating and capital budgets and present them to the Board for approval
- Ensure sound financial controls, policies, and reporting systems are in place
- Monitor financial performance and ensure compliance with approved budgets
- Oversee investment practices and make recommendations to the Board regardinginvestment policies
- Ensure the safeguarding of organizational assets, records, and insurance coverage
- Facilities and Asset Management: Oversee the ownership, operation, and maintenance of Sport Manitoba’s facility, ensuring it meets organizational needs, legal and safety requirements, and supports programming and community partnerships. Monitor facility-related budgets and capital planning to ensure cost-effective and sustainable operations
- Revenue Generation and Fundraising:Develop and oversee strategies to generate diversified revenue streams, including sponsorships, partnerships, grants, and facility-based opportunities. Build relationships with corporate, community, and philanthropic partners to support Sport Manitoba’s mission and long-term sustainability. Collaborate with the Board to identify and secure funding opportunities and monitor/report on revenue initiatives and financial outcomes
Organizational Leadership and Human Resources
- Provide leadership, direction, and supervision to senior staff and the management team
- Ensure effective human resource policies and practices are in place and consistently applied
- Authorize the hiring, supervision, evaluation, development, and termination of staff
- Foster a respectful, inclusive, and values-based workplace culture
- Support leadership development and succession planning to ensure organizational continuity
Sport System Leadership and Partnerships
- Strengthen relationships with Sport Partner Organizations and provide leadership in building their capacity
- Support the professional development of coaches, officials, and volunteers to enhance sport delivery across Manitoba
- Collaborate with government and sport partners to align programs with provincial sport priorities
- Champion safe sport, equity, diversity, and inclusion across all organizational activities
- Support meaningful engagement with Indigenous communities and partners
Communications, Advocacy, and Public Relations
- Act as the primary spokesperson and representative of Sport Manitoba
- Direct the development and implementation of marketing, communications, and public relations strategies
- Represent Sport Manitoba with government, and national sport organizations, business partners, and the public
- Advocate for the value and impact of sport on physical, mental, and social well-being
Risk Management and Compliance
- Identify, assess, and manage organizational risks
- Ensure legal, regulatory, and contractual obligations are met
- Oversee insurance coverage and the management of claims as required
Other Duties
- Represent Sport Manitoba on external committees or working groups as directed
- Perform related duties consistent with the role and responsibilities of the President & CEO
Qualifications:
- Post-secondary degree in Sport Administration, Business Administration, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Minimum of five (5) years of senior leadership experience, preferably in a not-for-profit or sport-related organization
- Comprehensive understanding of the sport delivery system and the broader sport sector
- Demonstrated experience in financial management, including budget development, forecasting, financial controls, and reporting
- Demonstrated strategic thinking and strong business acumen
- Proven experience working with a Board of Directors in a governance-based environment
- Demonstrated success in building partnerships with government, sport organizations, funders, and community stakeholders
- Excellent leadership and staff management, interpersonal, communication, and team-building skills
- Demonstrated integrity, sound judgment, and commitment to inclusion and ethical leadership
