Controller
Summit Search Group has partnered with a fast-growing Calgary based manufacturer, who began serving the oil and gas sector in western Canada but has grown to serve markets globally. They are in immediate need for a Controller in Calgary who will be accountable for the production of monthly and yearly financial reports, maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records, and a comprehensive set of controls and budgets designed to mitigate risk, enhance the accuracy of the company’s reported financial results, and ensure that reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles. The controller will lead the accounting team and contribute to the development and implementation of financial policies and procedures.
Responsibilities:
Financial Management:
- Oversee the operations of the accounting department, including the design of an organizational structure adequate for achieving the department’s goals and objectives
- Maintain a documented system of accounting policies and procedures
- Drive process improvement to ensure overall efficiency and effectiveness of the accounting team and internal controls
- Monitor and analyze financial performance, providing insights and recommendations to the executive team
Leadership:
- Supervise and provide direction, guidance, and support to the accounting department in Canada and overseas
- Foster a collaborative and high-performance work environment
- Provide guidance on complex accounting issues and ensure the team’s understanding of industry-specific regulations
Reporting & Compliance:
- Issue timely and complete financial statements including weekly cash flow reports, ensuring accuracy and compliance with accounting principles
- Coordinate month-end process and ensure accuracy of completeness of monthly financial reporting package
- Manage the production of the annual budget and forecasts including coordinating the preparation of corporate annual year-end
- Calculate variances from the budget and analysis of variances to targets and report significant issues to management
- Provide financial analyses as needed, for capital investments and pricing decisions
- Recommend benchmarks against which to measure the performance of company operations
- Prepare and review reports required for regulatory filings and provide support during external and internal audits
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 10 years of professional accounting experience with a preference for experience in the oil and gas industry
- Professional accounting designation
- Accounting experience overseas an asset
- Knowledge of International Financial Reporting Standards
- Proven ability to lead and develop a team of accounting professionals
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong attention to detail, problem-solving and critical-thinking skills
- Ability to accurately deliver in a fast-paced environment
