Managing Director, Product

Position Scope:

The Managing Director, Product, is a strategic leader that is responsible for leadership of a team of Product Directors and Product Owners that align to all Products that deliver business outcomes. They will lead their team and partner strategically with all businesses to define Product strategy and vision, and work with their team to ensure well-defined roadmaps exist for all Product and portfolios. They work with their Directors of Products to empower them to deliver against their respective Product strategy, while encouraging Product thinking and continuous improvement while leading the Product discipline. The ability to drive new products across the organization through innovative thinking and approaches will be required.


People & Leadership Responsibilities:

  • Be a servant leader to their team of Product Directors as a mentor and coach as well as a partner in driving Product strategy across the organization
  • Lead the adoption of Product thinking and an incremental delivery mindset across the organization leadership and their teams and the shift in culture to entrepreneurship, empowerment and enablement required to support
  • Lead the creation of a persistent Product funding model and the transformation away from project-based funding for Products
  • Where appropriate, review the Product discipline and implement evolution and enhancement action plans in support of excellence and lead the definition of organizational standards for Product as a practice
  • Collaborate with EOD leadership and the Agile Enablement Office to lead, advocate, foster and spread agile thinking, culture and behaviours in the organization
  • Define goals and success metrics for the Product function


Delivery Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the SMD, Product & Delivery, MD Delivery, and Senior Leadership teams across the organization to translate organizational strategy into Product strategy and align Product vision and roadmaps
  • Drive execution of Product strategy and roadmap across cross-functional teams by empowering and mentoring the Product team and liaising with senior level colleagues
  • Lead alignment and buy-in across the organization for the Product strategy ensuring clarity on the “why and why now”
  • Lead the team to support and partner with the broader EOD organization in the evolution of business case development and how it relates to target outcome/benefit realization
  • Accountable for the quality of the newly developed Product Ownership discipline. Oversee that staffing meets a high and consistent standard of skill and knowledge
  • Lead and own strategies and plans to enhance the partnership with business stakeholders in evaluating the benefits, costs and risks associated with solutions and services
  • Oversee fostering of learning across the Product Ownership team ensuring the organization’s Product Owners are using current industry practices/thinking
  • Support, advise, and provide mentorship to Directors of Product for navigation situational/context specific challenges
  • Champion new ways of representing and delivering information among senior stakeholders, to create an environment where Product Owners are able to communicate with their customers, stakeholders, and leaders most effectively
  • Maintains effective relationships with Executives and senior business leaders across the organization
  • Lead the prioritization the teams who will receive resourcing (in partnership with the Agile Enablement Office)


Management Accountability

  • Create an environment where high demand Product professionals want to work. This includes providing leadership and management of employees by fostering a high focus on talent development and retention, long term succession planning, and new talent selection
  • Coach and mentor direct reports; develops the next generation of leaders for succession planning
  • Accountable for planning, budgeting and staffing allocation for Product teams
  • Supports the SMD, Product & Delivery with leading and driving cultural change to a Product-based delivery across the organization. Sets the tone from the top, leads by example and demonstrates organizational values consistently in interactions across all levels


Decision Making

  • Determine and continuously review and improve the operating model and structure to be utilized throughout Product teams
  • Partner with Solutions Engineering, Enterprise Architecture, and Technology Infrastructure when evaluating new technologies that support new or existing Products
  • Own the selection and management of experience design agency partnerships
  • Negotiate acceptable outcomes that satisfy all stakeholders and result in an appropriate use of organizational resources, based on an understanding of the balance required between function, cost, risk, and delivery
  • Make key decisions related to management of the Product team budget
  • Make decisions, despite ambiguous and incomplete information

Required Skills and Knowledge:

  • Extensive knowledge of stakeholder partnership and management techniques and best practices including maintaining effective working relationships, delivering effective communication, managing expectations, facilitating negotiation and prioritization, and measuring satisfaction
  • Ability to effectively communicate across Executive and SMD level leadership
  • Knowledge of Agile methodologies, values, and principles
  • Strong interpersonal skills, coupled with excellent communications and people-interaction skills, leading to co-creating collaborative solutions and opportunities for individual and organization growth
  • Ability to understand, empathize and bridge multiple perspectives (e.g., Senior Leadership and technical specialists)
  • Familiarity with IT concepts, methodology and vocabulary is an asset
  • Knowledge of Investment teams and technology solutions is an asset
  • Awareness and embodiment of corporate leadership principles & behaviours
  • Ability to advise and invite alternate viewpoints in different stakeholders, including Senior Leadership
  • Ability to manage expectations and communicate appropriately with business stakeholders while making decisions about competing priorities

Education and Experience:

  • Relevant university degree
  • 10+ years’ experience in a delivery leadership role
  • 5+ years’ experience leading and mentoring a team of Directors of Product and Product Owners
  • 15+ years’ combined delivery experience
  • 5+ years working in Capital Markets/Investments an asset
  • Demonstrated leadership and management experience, including ability to coach and develop a high-performing Product Ownership teams
  • Track record of success leading Product teams and achieving business objectives
  • Proven ability to develop business cases to support persistent Product funding
  • Demonstrated experience in creating Product strategy and leadership of teams to create Product vision and roadmaps that easily convert to actionable user stories in the Product backlog
  • Demonstrated capacity to inspire, influence and achieve alignment up, down and across the organization
  • Proven experience in exercising diplomacy, maturity and judgment
  • Change management experience an asset
